These figures apply to long term nursing home care and are used to calculate Medicaid penalty periods for gifts and asset transfers. Under current law, there is a five year look back period for institutional long term care. Any non-exempt transfers or gifts of assets within this five year look back will be subject to a penalty period that is applied to nursing home eligibility. There are exemptions and protection strategies that may be applied to reduce your costs.
